What is a private IP address?

There are three blocks of IP address space used for private local networks. They are used by IANA (The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) and are not to be used on the Internet. Instead they are supposed to be used with internal web sites or intranets

They are as follows:

  • 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
  • 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
  • 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255

Private IP addresses are meant for devices that rest behind a router or some other NAT device or proxy server. These addresses are utilized to provide an additional range of addresses or to hide systems from the public Internet.

What is NAT?

NAT or Network Address Translation is an Internet standard that enables a local-area network (LAN) to use two sets of IP addresses: one for internal traffic and another one for external traffic.
